Regardless of how much sleep you get, seasonal fatigue may set in around the fall and winter. The change in season can significantly affect many people’s moods, energy levels, productivity at work or school, and ability to go about their daily lives without feeling tired during the day. It may seem like there isn’t anything you can do about it, but luckily there are ways to push back against this annual exhaustion!

Healthy Foods And Snacks To Fight Seasonal Fatigue

It might be a good idea to start looking at what you are eating and making healthier choices. Sometimes, our favorite comfort foods can leave us stuck to our chairs with no energy, regardless of how delicious they are. Instead, eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, nuts, and seeds can help your energy levels stay up as the seasons change.

Some nutritious snacks that can fight fatigue include:

  • Granola bars with dried fruit or dark chocolate
  • Peanut butter on toast
  • Apple slices dipped in nut butter
  • Pomegranate seeds
  • Dark leafy greens such as kale

Frequent Short Breaks During The Day

It is genuinely vital to get up and move your body around for a few minutes several times throughout your workday in order to give yourself a physical and mental break. Sitting at our desks for too long can force us into bad habits that leave us with no energy, which only makes things worse. Instead, make sure you get up every half hour or so during the day, even if it’s just to stroll down the hall for some water. It will help keep you focused on your tasks instead of feeling sleepy all afternoon. Remember to take longer breaks occasionally, so you can fully recharge.

Exercise And Mindfulness To Combat Stress And Fatigue

Exercise is an integral part of keeping your energy levels up throughout the day, especially if you feel stuck in a slump. Try to take some personal time for yourself each day – at least thirty minutes to focus solely on your exercise and not be distracted by anything else going on around you. Whether taking a walk or trying yoga, make sure that there aren’t any distractions during this time since they could leave you drained afterward instead of refreshed as you had hoped.

If you’re struggling with stress as well as fatigue, mindfulness exercises might help you get back into the swing of things again. 

Mindfulness means paying attention to what’s happening right now without thinking about other things (or stressing over them). Not practicing mindfulness likely takes away from your ability to concentrate on what’s going on. However, when you calm the mind and focus on the now, you help improve focus and allow yourself to notice when it is time to take a break, even if you’re in the middle of something important.
