Hemp Seed Oil vs. Hemp Oil: What’s the Difference?

By Libby Murphy

Recently, a customer wrote in asking us about our hemp oil tinctures, and how they’re different from hemp seed oil. There are some very notable differences, and we’re happy to help clear that up!

In this article, we’ll illustrate those differences and provide the information you need to determine if the product you’re about to buy is truly what you want to buy. Read on to learn more!

What is Cannabidiol?

Let’s start with the basics. Cannabidiol, otherwise known as CBD, is extracted from industrial hemp plants and is the main ingredient in hemp oil tinctures. It’s a cannabinoid that is sought after for numerous reasons, and unlike its sister THC, it doesn’t produce a high effect.

CBD works in tandem with terpenes, as well as other phytocannabinoids, to stimulate the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a phenomenal system in your body that is responsible for homeostasis. When illness or injury is detected, the ECS releases your body’s natural cannabinoids to help the healing process begin.

Phytocannabinoids work in much the same way as your body’s cannabinoids. CBD can be found in many forms, from tinctures to gummies to softgels to creams. When it comes to buying cannabidiol, there is indeed a product for everybody. And when combined with terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids, it produces the entourage effect, which amplifies the potential benefits further.

What is Hemp Seed Oil?

If you’re in the market for CBD, there’s no doubt you’ve come across products labeled as hemp seed oil. You’ve likely also noticed that there is a significant price difference between the two types of products, which can make hemp seed oil far more enticing.

Take your finger off that buy button… At least for a moment.

Hemp seed oil is a tincture made with seeds from the hemp plant. However, where hemp oil is filled with beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes, hemp seeds do not contain any of these compounds. More than that, it does not produce the entourage effect.

That said, hemp seed oil does have some nutritional benefits. It’s packed with omega fatty acids, vitamins, and nutrients, and has been linked to supporting immune and heart health. You’ve likely found it in the cooking aisle of your grocery store, as well as the skincare aisle—people love to for so many reasons.

How to Tell the Difference Between Hemp Seed and Hemp Oils

When buying CBD, always look for the third-party lab reports, or the CoA (certificate of analysis). The most reputable CBD manufacturers provide these as a way to ensure quality. Currently, the FDA does not regulate CBD, so companies turn to ISO-accredited labs to test the products against an international standard. The CoA tests for beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes, as well as toxic compounds such as mold, fungi, pesticides, fertilizers, and solvents.

Now, there is a possibility that you could see hemp seed oil listed as an ingredient on a CBD bottle. Where some brands opt for MCT oil for the carrier oil, others use hemp seed oil. If the latter situation is the case, further inspection can determine whether or not the product contains cannabinoids as well.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, this has helped to clear up some of the confusion that may exist over these two types of products. When buying hemp online, be sure to read the labels, the lab reports thoroughly, and do some research regarding the company you’re buying from as well. The last thing you want to do is make an investment in a product that isn’t what it was cracked up to be.
