What Is THC-P And What Are Its Benefits?

What is THC-P?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabiphorol, or THC-P, is a hemp derivative discovered by Italian researchers in 2019. This cannabinoid is found in extremely small amounts in the cannabis plant and is thought to be even more potent than Delta 9 THC. Just like with regular THC, THC-P binds to the CB1 receptors in the brain, but it does so with greater efficiency, making it an extremely potent THC. This means that it produces more substantial psychoactive effects.

However, the amount of naturally occurring THC-P in hemp plants is so minuscule that cannabis producers need to chemically alter cannabinoids in hemp to achieve an extractable amount of THC-P.

How Is THC-P Produced?

As we mentioned above, THC-P is a powerful cannabinoid that is naturally occurring in the cannabis plant. However, it needs to be present in large enough quantities to be used to infuse THC-P products like vape cartridges and gummies. To make these THC products, scientists first extract CBD from hemp.

This CBD is then put through a series of reactions that alter its structure. These reactions create more THC-P, which is then used to infuse the products. By extracting CBD and changing its structure, scientists are able to create a potent form of THC that they can use to infuse various cannabis products.

The Delta-9 THC molecule (pictured above) has an alkyl side chain with 5 carbon atoms. THC-P features 7 carbon atoms, making it bind very efficiently to your body’s CB1 endocannabinoid receptors.

THC-P and CB1 Endocannabinoid Receptors

THC-P is a potent analog of THC. It’s similar in structure, but the chemical structure of THC-P significantly changes how it interacts with your body’s endocannabinoid system, specifically the CB1 receptors.

The altered structure allows for efficient bonding. Regular Delta-9 THC has alkyl side chains on the molecules, with five carbon atoms on the chain. THCP, on the other hand, has two additional carbon atoms, making the total come to seven!

This slight change drastically increases potency, making it an estimated 30 times more powerful than Delta-9 THC when THC-P binds with CB1 cannabinoid receptors. In other words, a small amount of THCP can produce intense psychoactive effects. Therefore, it’s essential to be aware of the potential risks and side effects before using any products that contain THC-P.

Effects And Potential Benefits Of THC-P

THC-P is the perfect option for anyone with a high tolerance to marijuana or those who need more potent doses. It’s also an excellent way of saving money and consuming less cannabis overall while still experiencing all its potential benefits. The effects may include improved mood, relaxation, euphoria, and reduced physical tension (an indication that it could help treat chronic condition by providing pain relief). As research on the potential benefits of THC-P continues, this compound is likely to become even more popular among regular cannabis users.

Is THC-P Legal?

The short answer is yes, it is not illegal. However, there are a few crucial things to keep in mind. First, THC-P is a psychoactive compound that can potentially produce mind-altering effects. Second, THC-P is not currently FDA-approved for any medical condition, so it’s important to talk to your doctor before using it.

Finally, because THC-P is derived from cannabis, it may be subject to state and local laws regarding cannabis use. So if you’re considering using THC-P, be sure to check the laws in your area first.
