Can CBD Aid With Pet Seizures?

Pet seizures can be frightening for pet owners and pet caretakers. They are also challenging to diagnose, which means pets may experience uncontrolled seizures until a veterinarian sees them. Recent research indicates that CBD oil may help reduce the frequency of pet seizures. If you want to learn more about pet seizures and how CBD might be able to help, join us as we explore the subject in more detail below.

What Is A Seizure?

A seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the pet’s brain. Pets can experience seizures for a variety of reasons ranging from brain trauma to neurological disorders and more. In some cases, pet owners might be able to identify a cause, but many times there isn’t an obvious reason why pets have seizures. It’s also hard to diagnose what factors contribute to their likelihood of experiencing them in the future.

CBD may have the ability to reduce the likelihood and severity of pet seizures.

How And Why Seizures Occur In Pets

There are a few different ways in which pet seizures can occur. The most common type of seizure is called a focal seizure. Focal seizures are caused by abnormal electrical brain activity and often result in uncontrolled muscle spasms and shaking in specific areas of the body. Pets may also experience generalized seizures that often follow focal seizures. Generalized seizures affect the body as a whole. In more mild cases, pet owners may not even realize their pet has had a seizure unless they were paying close attention!

Some symptoms to look out for are sudden contractions of their muscles and limbs. The animal may also lose control of its bladder and bowels. In addition, pets may foam at the mouth, drool excessively, and have a blank stare. Before the seizure, they may also become restless and agitated or just seem out of it. A typical pet seizure can vary in length but may last roughly one minute.

CBD May Reduce Pet Seizures

More pet owners are using CBD for its potential benefits. To understand how CBD oil might help reduce the frequency of pet seizures, we must first look at exactly how it works on our endocannabinoid system (ECS).

What Is The Endocannabinoid System?

The ECS plays two crucial roles: it helps maintain homeostasis and facilitates communication between different cells in the body. The ECS consists of cannabinoid receptors found on the surface of nerve cells in the pet’s brain and body. CBD is able to interact with these neuroreceptors, potentially providing a host of beneficial effects that can help reduce seizures.

When it comes to pet seizures, CBD has two important mechanisms of action. First, it helps protect nerve cells from damage caused by seizure activity, as CBD is a neuroprotectant. Second, CBD regulates neurotransmitter release, which may help keep electrical impulses in check. This may reduce the likelihood of a pet having a seizure.
