The Neuroprotective Qualities Of CBD

CBD As A Neuroprotectant

The CBD found in cannabis has been shown to have neuroprotective qualities. CBD is a natural compound that might have the ability to protect your neurons from diseases like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. CBD may be a supplementary treatment for these different neurodegenerative disorders but has negligible side effects if any. This blog post will discuss CBD’s role in protecting against neurodegeneration.

What Is Cannabidiol (CBD)?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of many compounds that are found in the hemp plant. CBD has recently become more widely recognized for its medicinal uses, particularly after CBD was shown to help treat epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease symptoms with significantly fewer side effects than some current medications. Cannabinoids affect neurotransmitter release through direct interactions on cannabinoid receptors located throughout our brains. Thus, cannabinoids may be used in some cases as neuroprotective agents since they have been proven to reduce neuronal injury due to oxidative stress. This helps prevent neurons from degenerating, which may potentially slow down some diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Neurodegeneration

What is neurodegeneration? Neurodegeneration is a broad term that has been used to describe the damage or loss of neurons in any number of diseases. Neurodegenerative disorders are illnesses where progressive neuron death results in symptoms associated with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Major Neurodegenerative Diseases

Perhaps the most common neurodegenerative disease is Alzheimer’s, with more than 3 million cases diagnosed per year. Parkinson’s disease is another well-known neurodegenerative disorder with approximately 200,000 cases per year in the United States. Other neurodegenerative diseases that are less common but still cause significant damage and death include:

– Huntington’s disease

– ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

How CBD May Help With Parkinson’s And Alzheimer’s

CBD was shown in a study to help protect animals with Parkinson’s disease. CBD may be an alternative treatment for Parkinson’s since it does not cause the same side effects as current medications. CBD has also been shown to ward off neuron damage caused by the development of Alzheimer’s disease. CBD helps protect brain neurons from oxidative stress and may reduce inflammation associated with this form of neurodegeneration.

Conclusions On CBD As A Neuroprotectant

Cannabidiol or CBD, found naturally in the cannabis Sativa variety of hemp plants, shows promise as being able to protect against neuronal damage due to oxidative stress because of its antioxidant properties. However, it’s worth noting that while there are many studies on cannabidiol and its potential benefits to neurodegenerative diseases, much more research is still required in this field before any definitive conclusions on treatments can be made.
